Pace Calculation:

  • rh =

Hours portion of your time spent running the distance below

  • rm =

Minutes portion of your time spent running the distance below

  • rs =

Seconds portion of your time spent running the distance below

  • d =

Distance covered in the timed run

  • du =

Distance unit that your run distance is measured in

  • pu =

Units to output your pace measurement

  • om =

Minutes portion of your run pace scaled for one output distance unit

  • os =

Seconds portion of your run pace scaled for one output distance unit

  • ou =

Output pace dimensions. Metric or Imperial/US Customary.

  •

Choose the number of decimals to show in your answer. This is also known as significant figures. Select an appropriate amount of significant figures based on the precision of the input numbers.

Pace Formula

In running pace is a useful metric for monitoring your progress and level of fitness. Pace measures a set distance in units of time. Typically a pace is given as the time required to run one kilometre or one mile. Pace can be calculated from any combination of known distance and time.

PACE = TOTAL TIME / DISTANCE

If the time was not measured in the distance dimensions that will be used to express the pace a conversion factor must be applied.

PACE = TOTAL TIME / (DISTANCE * FACTOR)

Pace Variables

Input variables are time and distance. Output variables are the pace, which consists of time per distance.

Run: Hours (rh)
Hours portion of your measured running time, if any.
Run: Minutes (rm)
Minutes portion of your measured running time.
Run: Seconds (rs)
Seconds portion of your measured running time.
Run: Distance (d)
Distance that your run time was measured over.
Distance Units (du)
Units of length that your run is measured in. Input a distance of kilometres, miles, metres, or yards.
Pace Units (pu)
Time per distance dimension that you would like your output pace to be calculated in.
Pace: Minutes (om)
Minutes portion of the calculated pace.
Pace: Seconds (os)
Seconds portion of the calculated pace.
Pace Units (ou)
Dimensions of the calculated pace. Time per Kilometre or Time Per Mile.

Pace Solution

If a run of 5km is run in 30 minutes what is the pace in time per kilometres?

  • PACE = TOTAL TIME / DISTANCE
  • The formula for running pace calculation. Since the distance is measured in the same dimensions that will be part of the pace dimensions there is no needs for a conversion factor
  • PACE = 00:30:00 / 5
  • Substitute in the time and distance
  • PACE = 6
  • Calculate the pace. Converting time to seconds may make it easier when dealing with times that have hours, minutes, and seconds
  • 6:00 Minutes per Kilometre

A 5km run timed at exactly 30 minutes and 0 seconds is a pace of exactly 6 Minutes per Kilometre.
